Your Nervous System Reset for 2026

As we prepare to step into 2026, many of us are starting to set some intentions, thinking about what we want more of, what we want to heal, and how we want to feel in our bodies. One of the most powerful (and often overlooked) foundations for healing is nervous system regulation.

A dysregulated nervous system is a primary driver of so many presentations I see clinically: hormonal imbalances, digestive complaints, anxiety, poor sleep, fatigue, skin issues, and fertility challenges. Before we try to “fix” or “treat” anything, my approach is always to support and calm the nervous system back into a parasympathetic-dominant state, the state where the body feels safe. Only then can deep healing truly begin.

Why Nervous System Regulation Matters:

When we are stuck in fight-or-flight, the body believes it is under threat. Think sabre-tooth tiger mode, where our ancestors needed a big surge of cortisol and adrenaline to get them away from the tiger and keep them safe. The nervous system’s job here is survival, not optimisation. Stress hormones rise, blood flow is redirected, and the body prioritises the functions required to keep you alive. Everything else is temporarily considered “non-essential” and dialled down.

In modern life when this “fight or flight” stress becomes chronic, one of the first systems affected is the reproductive system via the HPO axis (hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis). From a biological perspective, this makes complete sense as the body does not want the added burden of growing another life when it is receiving signals that you are in danger.

This can present as irregular or absent periods, anovulatory cycles, difficulty conceiving, hormonal acne and breakouts. HPO-axis dysfunction can also contribute to histamine intolerance and heightened anxiety.

It is easy to assume the reproductive system itself is the root cause. But clinically, I like to peel it back one step further and start with the nervous system. When we create safety and regulation first, the body is far more receptive to hormonal healing and rebalancing.

The Nervous System–Gut Connection:

This nervous system–first approach applies just as strongly to digestive complaints. Yes, the gut microbiome plays a profound role in digestion and absolutely needs to be addressed in any gut case. However, the influence of the nervous system on gut health is often underestimated.

You can throw all the supplements, antimicrobials, and probiotics at gut dysbiosis, but without addressing the nervous system and its role in getting you to this point, you are missing a vital piece of the puzzle. The gut and nervous system are in constant communication via the gut-brain axis. Healing one without supporting the other is rarely effective long-term.

Supporting Your Nervous System in 2026:

So how do we begin to support our nervous system as we move into 2026?

It starts with the foundations:

  • Prioritising sleep - consistent bedtimes, quality sleep routines, and allowing enough time for rest and repair.

  • Managing stress through movement - gentle walks, strength training, yoga, or movement that feels nourishing rather than depleting.

  • Breathwork, such as 4-7-8 breathing, to actively shift the body out of fight-or-flight. Don’t underestimate the power of the breath!

  • A nourishing, balanced whole-food diet rich in nutrients to support both the nervous system and gut health. Plenty of good fats and protein for neurotransmitter production.

  • Limit or reduce alcohol consumption - while alcohol may feel relaxing in the short term, it ultimately dysregulates the nervous system, increases anxiety, and disrupts restorative sleep. Reducing intake allows the nervous system to settle into a more parasympathetic-dominant state.

  • Targeted supplements for nervous system support, including magnesium glycinate and B vitamins. In some cases, supplementation can be incredibly beneficial, but only when the correct form and dose are prescribed.

  • Connection and community - surrounding yourself with people who love and support you, who help you feel safe and uplifted and stepping away from any “toxic” relationships that no longer serve you.

  • Find your purpose - actively bring joy and meaning into your life through value-aligned activities, creative outlets, and work that feels purposeful. A strong sense of meaning has been shown to support nervous system regulation, resilience, and overall mental health.

    * It is also important to acknowledge the value of working with a qualified counsellor or psychologist; sometimes talking is the best medicine! Nervous system regulation is not just physical, emotional processing, feeling supported, and learning tools to navigate stress are powerful components of healing.
